Asset Manager - CIO and Chairman

SEARCH FOR A CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER AND CHAIRMAN

We were instructed by a small asset manager to find them an independent non-executive director who would at some point in the near future go on to become Chairman of the business. The business was an unusual mix of insurance assets, institutional assets and private wealth assets and had a fairly conservative risk profile. Add into them mix an unusual ownership structure as well as a very specific brief on the background of the candidate and the focus of the search became very sharp indeed.

Upon being appointed as the retained search firm for the role we set about meeting the board of directors as well as two key stakeholders from the parent company. Once we had a brief on what all the key individuals felt they needed from the person in this role we were able to put together a very specific role profile as well as a set of questions we could ask to make sure we were ticking all the boxes of the clients’ brief. Within 3 weeks we had drawn up an initial long list, it took us a further two weeks to meet with 10 potential candidates and draw up a very strong short list, and after presenting this to the nominations committee we had this whittled down to three. After a 2 stage interview process designed to ensure the difficult cultural fit we were able to make an offer to one of the three candidates which was subsequently accepted. Both client and candidate have since been very happy with the process.
